When it comes to cleaning floor surfaces, then Sodium Hypochlorite is highly effective against other coronaviruses and is found in many household bleaches. Even 0.1% of sodium hypochlorite or any other solution containing 70% of ethanol is found to be effective on smaller surfaces after a contact time of a minute.

For larger areas such as floors, 0.5% sodium hypochlorite is advised. You can dilute household bleach from a traditional 5% to get the desired strength. You know what? Quite similar results were obtained using common disinfectants and detergents, they hardly require contact times of up to five minutes to achieve the same results.

BEWARE – household bleach is damaging to some surfaces in those cases. The decontamination can be carried out with a household detergent followed by a solution containing at least 70% ethanol.

How to practice and how to buy the right disinfectant solution?

  • First, check the manufacturer's instructions to make sure the cleaning products won’t harm equipment or fixtures and fittings. In case of any doubt, contact the manufacturer or supplier

  • Use 70% ethanol solution to disinfect reusable equipment between patients' uses as long as it is safe to so do. This would apply to headrests, chinrests, handles, trial frames, and other similar objects.

  • You can also use antimicrobial wipes, but you must ensure that they contain active ingredients In sufficient quantities and that you have enough contact time.

  • To disinfect commonly touched surfaces, use 0.5% sodium hypochlorite solution, and wherever possible, use disinfectant detergent solution followed by either sodium hypochlorite 0.1% solution, or 70% ethanol solution.
