The Applications And Properties Of Tungsten Heavy Alloy

Tungsten heavy alloy contains a large amount of tungsten along with small amounts of iron, nickel, and copper elements. Tungsten is alloyed with other metals going through the compacting and sintering process to form a powder. These alloys are ideal for high-density applications and especially use in radiation shielding. These alloying elements improve machinability and ductility. These tungsten heavy alloys stock as tungsten alloy rod, tungsten alloy plate, tungsten alloy sheet, and tungsten alloy bars. Further on, they use for different purposes in different industries.it is excellent in applications requiring high performance in density, corrosion resistance, radiation shielding, and machinability. All these properties make it ideal for use in specified steelmaking, aerospace, mining, and medical industries.

Radiation absorption:

One of the advantages of tungsten heavy alloy is radiation shielding which is associated with tungsten alloy’s high-density property. The effect of this shielding of material goes up with the rising of its density. Due to the high-density property, tungsten heavy alloy is widely used in radiation shielding applications. The capacity of radiation absorption is one time higher than the lead-based material. On the other side, it is also non-toxic to the surrounding. Moreover, the capacity of absorbing X-ray and gamma radiation is 30%-40% higher than lead materials.

High density:

The density of tungsten heavy alloy is 16.5-19.0 g/cm3 which is the most important property for industries. This density is 1.5 times higher than lead and two times higher than steel. Other metals like platinum, tantalum, and gold, etc. have a comparable density to tungsten heavy alloy. This property makes heavy alloys to be capable of being machines into a variety of density which is highly needed in industrial fields.

Hardness and wear resistance:

Another valuable property is its high hardness and resistance, which is useful in a large number of applications. This belongs to the refractory metal alloy which is resistant to heat and wear. It is primarily used to make components that required high wearing resistance like machining tools including dices and lathes. Also used in manufacturing automobile parts like transmissions, engines, steering, etc. which improves the machining accuracy.
