The Basic Knowledge About Dry-Type Transformation

A dry-type transformer is an electric equipment that deals with electric voltage. This transformer never uses any kind of insulating liquid where winding or core are immersed in liquid. These are power transformers with windings covered in epoxy resin. The installation process of dry-type transformers is easier as it is dry and does not require any cooling oil. Moreover, no need to contain in a fire-proof vault. The dry type distribution transformer is used in a wide variety of applications and can be installed outdoors as well as indoors. This transformer is used to operate large high voltage power. It is a voltage changing device that is air-cooled.

Types of dry-type transformers:

There are two types of dry-type transformer.

  • Cast resin dry type transformer:

This type of transformer is used in high moisture-prone areas. It is only because of its primary and secondary windings features that encapsulated with epoxy resin. The encapsulation of CRT helps in preventing moisture to penetrate to affect the winding materials. It is a better overload capacity.

  • Vacuum pressure impregnated transformer:

This Vacuum pressure impregnated transformer (VPI) is a type of transformer that is made with minimal flammable material. This material is used as an insulation of winding. This transformer’s windings are made up of foil or strip in a layer. The primary and secondary winding of the Vacuum pressure impregnated transformer with the core is fastened within a vacuum protective box safely.

Advantages of dry-type transformers:

  • Less maintenance and pollution-free solution.
  • Easy installation.
  • An excellent performance especially in the case of seismic events.
  • No fire hazard.
  • Durable because of low thermal and dielectric heating.
  • Reduced cost on installation works and fire protection systems.
  • Environmentally friendly
  • Safety for property and people.
  • Perfect for dam and contaminated areas.
  • Excellent capacity of supporting overloads.

Disadvantages of dry-type transformer:

  • If it faces winding failure, the whole set u need to be changed. Which means the change of high voltage and low voltage with limb completely.
  • The dry-type transformer is comparatively costlier than oil-cooled transformers even with the same power and voltage ratings.
